Fifth-Largest Employer in Mexico: The Drug Cartels!

It’s important for jobs to be created in Mexico.

But what if criminal gangs are one of the biggest employers in the country?

A recent study has found that, taken collectively, the Mexican drug cartels are now the fifth largest employer in Mexico.

From ZME Science: “Mexican cartels now boast an estimated 175,000 members, making them the fifth largest employer in Mexico, right between the grocery chain Oxxo and telecoms company América Móvil.”

Look at chart B, which shows the eleven biggest employers in Mexico. The cartels are #5:

FEMSA (employer #1) runs Oxxo (employer #5), but for some reason they are listed separately here. But according to these employment figures, whether you count FEMSA and Oxxo as separate companies or the same company, the cartels still would be the fifth largest employer in the country.

Mr. Wall: this is beyond shocking. My poor Mexico. I’m going to say something controversial but hopefully people will think about this. I first crossed into Mexico in the early and mid 1960s. It was 1971 before I traveled the country fully. The only politician I’ve ever seen try help the Mexican worker was Donald Trump when he was President the first time. In the auto deal he made with Mexico then certain workers were to start earning 16 dollars per hour. I wrote friends at the time I expected something would be done so those wages were never paid. Car manufacturing in Mexico has been the biggest rip off of both Americans and Mexicans that could ever be imagined. An auto worker in Detroit working on a car that would sell for $40,000 earned about 45 bucks an hour a decade back. So we shift the manufacturing to Mexico –based on wages 10-12 years ago the auto companies could hire 4 workers at subsistence levels for each hour they paid the American. –Now here is the joke on all of us except the politicians and super rich if those are not the same: America has lost a job, Mexico has gained 5 subsistence level jobs–the auto manufacturers make about $11,000 more per car and American or Mexican car buyers still pays 40 grand a car. No wonder the cartels employ so many!
