{"id":162,"date":"2024-03-22T04:57:15","date_gmt":"2024-03-22T04:57:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mexiconewsreport.com\/?p=162"},"modified":"2024-05-23T04:53:20","modified_gmt":"2024-05-23T04:53:20","slug":"the-2024-mexican-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mexiconewsreport.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/22\/the-2024-mexican-election\/","title":{"rendered":"The 2024 Mexican Election"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Mexico has a presidential election every six years, and the United States every four years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every 12 years, therefore, Mexico and the United States have a presidential election the same year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, 2024, is one of those years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mexican election of 2024 is scheduled for June 2<sup>nd<\/sup>.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To win the Mexican election, a candidate must win a plurality of the popular vote. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two major candidates for president, and both are women.&nbsp;&nbsp; That means it is most likely that before this year is over, Mexico will have its first female president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two principal candidates are Claudia Sheinbaum and Xochitl Galvez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CLAUDIA SHEINBAUM<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/mexiconewsreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/image-8.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-163\" style=\"width:635px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexiconewsreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/image-8.png 960w, https:\/\/mexiconewsreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/image-8-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/mexiconewsreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/image-8-768x512.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/americas\/mexicos-sheinbaum-holds-lead-june-election-poll-2024-03-19\/\">Reuters<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Claudia Sheinbaum is the candidate of MORENA, the political party of current president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO).&nbsp;  Two smaller parties, the Labor Party and the Green Party, are in coalition with MORENA in the <em>Sigamos Haciendo Historia<\/em> (Let&#8217;s Keep Making History) alliance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sheinbaum was born in 1962 in Mexico City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She is an ethnic Jew, though apparently does not practice Judaism as a religion.&nbsp;&nbsp; Her father was an Ashkenazi Jew and her mother a Sephardi Jew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A scientist, Sheinbaum studied physics &nbsp;in Mexico\u2019s  UNAM (<em>Universidad Nacional Aut\u00f3noma de M\u00e9xico<\/em>) and earned her PhD in energy engineering at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California in the U.S.A.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Sheinbaum has written more than 100 articles and two books dealing with energy, environment and sustainable development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2007, Dr. Sheinbaum was on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) at the United Nations in the field of energy and industry and was part of a group that won the Nobel Peace Prize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From 2000 to 2006, Dr. Sheinbaum was Mexico City\u2019s Secretary of the Environment. From 2015 to 2017 she was mayor of Tlalpan, a borough in Mexico City. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From 2018 to 2023, Claudia Sheinbaum was Mayor of Mexico City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>XOCHITL GALVEZ<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/mexiconewsreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/image-13.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-168\" style=\"width:407px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexiconewsreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/image-13.png 800w, https:\/\/mexiconewsreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/image-13-240x300.png 240w, https:\/\/mexiconewsreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/image-13-768x960.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/X%C3%B3chitl_G%C3%A1lvez#\/media\/File:Bertha_X%C3%B3chitl_G%C3%A1lvez_Ruiz_(2020)_cropped.jpg\">Santiago Alba Ibarra<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Xochitl Galvez is the candidate of the <em>Fuerza y Coraz\u00f3n por M\u00e9xico<\/em> (Strength and Heart for Mexico) alliance, formed by three parties: the PAN, the PRI and the PRD. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Xochitl Galvez  was born in the central state of Hidalgo in 1963.&nbsp;&nbsp; Her father was Otomi Indian and her mother mestizo (mixed Otomi and European).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She studied computer engineering at the UNAM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Xochitl Galvez was an entrepreneur, founding a technology company called High Tech Services.&nbsp; This company dealt with such things as designing intelligent buildings,&nbsp; saving energy, automation, telecoms and security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also started a company called OMEI, which dealt with intelligent infrastructures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recognitions for her work include being named as one of 100 Global Leaders of the World&#8217;s Future at the  World Economic Forum Davos in 1999 and as one of 25 Latin America\u2019s New Business Elite by Business Week in 2000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1995 she founded the Porvenir Foundation to fight child malnutrition and help women in areas of Mexico with large indigenous populations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Mexican federal government she directed the <em>Instituto Nacional de los Pueblos Ind\u00edgenas <\/em>(the National Institute of Indigenous Peoples) from 2000 to 2006.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From 2015 to 2018 Galvez was mayor of Miguel Hidalgo, a borough in Mexico City. But things could change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recent poll results:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reforma Poll &nbsp;(March 6<sup>th<\/sup>-12, 1000 adults ); After 17% with no preference were subtracted, <br>58% of those remaining supported Sheinbaum and 34% supported Galvez.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Oraculus Poll (as of March 20): Sheinbaum 60%; Galvez 34%; Alvarez Maynez 6%.&nbsp;<br><br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mexico has a presidential election every six years, and the United States every four years.
