Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/mnh.inah.gob.mx\/chimalli-tesoro-de-moctezuma-en-chapultepec\">Museo de las Culturas de Oaxaca<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>From the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/fbi-returns-long-lost-manuscript-signed-by-hernan-cortes-in-1527-to-mexicos-national-archives-180987191\/\"><em>Smithsonian<\/em> magazine<\/a>:  <strong>&#8220;The FBI has returned a 500-year-old manuscript page signed by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Hernan-Cortes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hern\u00e1n Cort\u00e9s<\/a>, the Spanish conquistador who conquered the Aztec Empire, to Mexico\u2019s national archives.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;The document, which is dated February 20, 1527, details &#8216;the payment of pesos of common gold for expenses,&#8217; says special agent Jessica Dittmer, a member of the FBI\u2019s art crime team, in a statement. &#8216;It really gives a lot of flavor as to the planning and preparation for [uncharted] territory back then.&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;The page was once part of a larger collection of documents signed by Cort\u00e9s that is housed at the Mexican archives, known as El Archivo General de la Naci\u00f3n.&#8221;<\/strong><br>    &nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/mexiconewsreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-6-1024x768.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2850\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mexiconewsreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-6-1024x768.png 1024w, https:\/\/mexiconewsreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-6-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/mexiconewsreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-6-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/mexiconewsreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-6.png 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Palacio de Lecumberri (former prison) which houses  El Archivo General de la Naci\u00f3n<br> Source:<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Palacio_de_Lecumberri#\/media\/File:Palacio_de_Lecumberri_04.jpg\">GAED<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>So how&#8217;d they discover this document went missing ?     <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;In 1993, when specialists were preserving the documents on microfilm, they found that 15 pages had gone missing.  Archivists aren\u2019t sure exactly when the pages vanished, but they suspect that an unknown party stole them sometime between 1985 and October 1993. Before the theft, archivists had marked the pages using a wax numbering system that was only in use for a short period between 1985 and 1986.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;Last year, Mexican officials contacted the FBI, hoping the agency\u2019s art crime team could help locate a small piece of the manuscript: page 28.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201c &#8216;With the Mexican national archive\u2019s meticulous notes about the collection\u2014even indicating which numbered pages went missing and the manner in which certain pages had been torn\u2014investigators believed they could track it down through more traditional detective work,&#8217; says the FBI\u2019s statement.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;Officials didn\u2019t provide many details about the investigative process, but they say they used &#8216;open-source research&#8217; to narrow down the search to the continental United States. After locating the document, they determined it had &#8216;changed hands several times over&#8217; since it was first stolen, says Dittmer.  As such, nobody will be prosecuted for the theft. Still, Dittmer hopes the return will send a message to potential criminals: The FBI is committed to recovering missing artworks and artifacts\u2014even if decades have passed since the crime.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201c &#8216;Pieces like this are considered protected cultural property and represent valuable moments in Mexico\u2019s history,&#8217; says Dittmer. &#8216;This is something that the Mexicans have in their archives for the purpose of understanding history better.&#8217; \u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what is in the document?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;The 1527 document includes logistical details connected to Cort\u00e9s\u2019 travels in what would become New Spain [<\/strong>name of colonial Mexico<strong>].  It\u2019s dated to February 20, &#8216;just days before one of Cort\u00e9s\u2019&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/read.dukeupress.edu\/hahr\/article\/42\/1\/105\/159586\/The-Constant-Captain-Gonzalo-de-Sandoval\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">top lieutenants<\/a>&nbsp;[Gonzalo de Sandoval] was appointed co-governor of the conquered territory,&#8217; writes Reuters&#8217; Sarah Morland.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a photo of the document.
