The Mexican Supreme Court, La\u00a0Suprema Corte de Justicia de la Naci\u00f3n\u00a0(SCJN)<\/em>, meets in this building in Mexico City:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On February 26th, however, the Court convened 900 kilometers away, in the municipio<\/em> of Tenejapa in the state of Chiapas.

There were 6 Supreme Court justices, including Chief Justice Hugo Aguilar. Two other justices participated remotely, one other didn’t participate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Four of the justices, including Chief Justice Aguilar, wore traditional local raiment and hats.

The justices sat at a table under a tent, with an audience in the plaza of 2000 people.

The proceedings were held in the Spanish language, but with translation to Tzotzil and Tzeltal, both Mayan languages. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the cases the Court discussed was a Chiapas case, involving the community of La Candelaria in the municipio<\/em> of San Cristobal de las Casas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Court ruled in La Candelaria’s favor, ordering the Chiapas state legislature to grant the community self-rule and give La Candelaria its budget allocation directly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
