The Mexican National Guard (Guardia Nacional<\/em>) is the national gendarmerie. A gendarmerie is a military force with law enforcement duties. Some examples are the French Gendarmerie Nationale<\/em>, the Italian carabinieri<\/em> and the Guardia Civil<\/em> in Spain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mexican Guardia Nacional<\/em> was formed in 2019 by combining units and officers from the Federal Police, Military Police and Naval Police. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mexican National Guard has added a new soldier to its forces – a Chihuahua dog called “Comando Chihuahua<\/em>\u201d. Here is a photo:

Reuters<\/a> ran an article about this military canine: “Comando may be tiny, but Mexico’s National Guard is giving him a very big role.<\/strong> Outfitted with miniature goggles, a \u200bfitted tactical vest, a helmet and even a petite head-mounted camera, the \u200c7-kilogram (15-pound) Chihuahua has become the most unusual \u2014 and smallest \u2014 canine member of the force.”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Officers said the 13-month-old pup is being trained not just as a crowd-pleasing mascot but for search-and-rescue \u200bwork as well.”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One advantage is a Chihuahua could get into some small spaces. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Diminutive Comando, who stands 21 centimeters (8 inches) tall, looks nothing like \u200bthe powerful dogs usually associated with military or police units.”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“During \u2060a training session in Mexico City last week, the little dog scampered \u200bup stairs and over obstacles while a much larger, fully trained canine named \u200bRoko looked on.”<\/strong>

“Lieutenant Debora Hernandez said Comando challenges two stereotypes: That only big dogs can serve in the National Guard, and that a military-style force cannot build a warmer \u200bconnection with the public. His presence, she said, reminds people that ‘beneath the \u200buniform, we are human beings.’ “<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or in the case of Comando, a dog.

“The force adopted Comando about six months ago in the northern \u200cstate \u2060of Chihuahua, which inspired the breed’s name, after his elderly owners became unable to care for him. Comando now appears at civic ceremonies, school events and community outreach programs.”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chihuahua is the world’s smallest recognized dog breed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Comando is an outlier in a National Guard canine force of \u200babout 350 dogs, \u200bmost of them \u2060traditional working breeds such as German Shepherds and Labrador Retrievers.”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Chihuahuas, known for their large upright ears, big personalities and expressive \u200beyes, may be alert and energetic, but they are \u200brarely seen \u2060as candidates for serious operational work.”<\/strong>

“Comando has already appeared in Mexico’s Independence Day parade and has inspired his own animated likeness and a growing crop of \u2060memes on \u200bsocial media.”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This growing visibility also serves a \u200bbroader purpose. Officials said Comando helps soften the image of the National Guard, which is under Army control.”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well, you don’t want to “soften the image of the National Guard” for the drug cartels. But there’s no reason Comando Chihuahua can’t be a valuable canine contributor to the Mexican military.
