Mexico has the reputation of having big families.
In reality the Mexican birth rate has been dropping for decades.
Here’s a chart from the World Bank that shows births per woman in Mexico from 1960 to 2024. In 1960, the rate was 6.8 births per woman, in 2024 it had dropped to 1.9 births per woman.
Another source puts the 2024 rate even lower, at 1.23 births per woman. That’s lower than the rate in any U.S. state:
According to Simon Kuestenmacher, “Mexico’s new birth data is striking: fertility fell to just 1.23 births per woman in 2024, lower than any US state. Mexico City is at only 0.79 and several regions around 1.0. The least fertile US state, Vermont, is at 1.30.”
