The coach of Mexico’s national soccer team, Javier Aguirre, resigned after Mexico’s elimination from the World Cup on July 5th.

The Mexican Soccer Federation has named Rafael Marquez as the new coach of the national team.

Marquez had been serving as an assistant coach of the team since July of 2024.
Marquez is a former soccer star himself. In five previous World Cups (2002, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018), he was captain of the Mexican national team.

Marquez played for several teams in professional soccer leagues: in Mexico for Atlas in Guadalajara and for Leon; for Monaco, Barcelona and Verona in Europe and for the New York Red Bulls.
